The Mississippi Delta
The Mississippi Delta is flat and fertile. Cotton and soybeans grow well into the fall. Many people think of the Delta and think of the Blues or Slavey or Casinos. It is all of those either in the present or the collective memory. There are ripples of restlessness that I felt subtly-mostly from young people. The older folks wondered why today's youth aren't more like them. To which I always ask "and what did your grandparents think about you when you were 19?" Every driveway had at least one dog. Every town had a place where people gathered after work to talk, to smoke, to pass the time- It was often outside a market, or the back of a pick-up truck parked near the roadside. The people were friendly, kind, and a bit curious about all these people with cameras showing up. But no-one asked us to leave, or ran us off with unkind words. There were plenty of conversations and lots of warm handshakes. I hope to return to the Delta for more photographs, more stories, more handshakes.
